Open Waters is an original work for the theatre created through collaboration between Singaporean artist Tan Shou Chen and Bangkok artist Jaturachai Srichanwanpen. The creation process is documented here.

Open Waters writes a new creation myth for Singapore and Bangkok. The work uses Water Myths as a starting thematic point. As a destructive force, water floods, destroys, and demolishes. As a birth force, it grows, rejuvenates and revives. 75% of the human body is made of water. Water, both life-giving and life-taking, is a recurrent trope in Singapore and Thailand culture.
Devised over the course of 18 months, the artists spent time in research, workshop and rehearsal in each other’s countries with the aim to create a work that offers a contemporary look at what it means to be Singaporean and Thai.
This collaboration between Singaporean and Bangkok contemporary theatremakers establishes a new relationship between Singapore and Thai theatre. A key component of the process involves a cross-cultural creation, one that is influenced by being each other’s countries. The creative process also draws inspiration from existing traditional arts found in the artists’ respective countries to develop a new story for theatre.
Open Waters is a project supported by the Creation Grant from the Singapore National Arts Council. The project was also developed in residence at Centre 42 (Basement Workshop) in Singapore and Democrazy Theatre Studio in Bangkok.

เราใช้กระบวนการค้นหา ค้นคว้า ทำแบบฝึกหัด และฝึกซ้อมรวมเป็นเวลาทั้งหมด 18 เดือน ซึ่งกระบวนการทั้งหมดนี้จะเกิดขึ้นทั้งในสิงคโปร์และไทย เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งผลงานร่วมสมัยที่สามารถบอกเล่าถึงความเป็นไทยและสิงคโปร์
การร่วมงานระหว่างศิลปินการละครจากทั้งสองสถานที่ในครั้งนี้เป็นการเริ่มต้นความสัมพันธ์ใหม่ระหว่างวงการละครของทั้งสองประเทศ องค์ประกอบหลักของกระบวนการคือการเรียนรู้ข้ามวัฒนธรรม รวมถึงการศึกษาศิลปะการแสดงที่มีอยู่แล้วในแต่ละประเทศแล้วนำมาสร้างเรื่องราวใหม่สำหรับใช้แสดงเป็นละครเวที
